| A
Truly Personal South African Tour |
Rugby
league is still a very young sport in South Africa. We
want to
introduce more touring sides
to rugby league and promote the game in South Africa. A lot of hard work still needs to be done and exposing South African teams to the UK teams will bridge the gap quicker. For more information on rugby league in South Africa follow the link to there website at www.sarugbyleague.co.za
The opening
game was played at the South African Defence Force sports ground, Thaba
Tswana, vs the SA national A team.
The gamewas a physical, strong and determined show by both teams with
the
Army winning 40 - 22, a good start to the tour. The 2nd game was
also at Thaba Tswana but this time against the South
African National side, the
Rhinos .Boy was this a titanic battle! As the first game, the passion, direct running, brutal aggression and big hearts was the theme and the game had everything. At half time the Army were leading 24-6 but the Rhinos closed the gap and the final score was 38-34 to the Army. The South Africans declared the spectacle to have been "the most amazing display of rugby league in South Africa for many years".
After these two
mammoth games and recovery in the ice pool, Sport n
Safari organised test tickets
for the 2nd Lions test vs The Springboks, a truly memorable occasion. Before the final game against the Northern Bulls, the team had a days training on a field in a safari park. After a hot and good session the team was treated to a mini safari drive where they saw all the big cats and braai (BBQ) on the game farm outside PTA, Sidiba Kwela.
The 3rd and final game vs the Northern Bulls was maybe a game too far
and with all the injuries I even
had to put on my boots and had a last game with all my fellow Army friends. It was never to be and the locals won 24 - 32. The warmth and generosity of the Northern Bulls in the club house after the game brought the tour to a very satisfactory conclusion. Two days of R&R was left before the flight back to the UK and Sport n Safari organised a proper safari in the famous Pilansberg game reserve next to Sun City about 1.5 hrs drive from PTA. There we saw 4 of the big 5 with the lions walking right pass the vehicle but not able to track down the elusive leopard. Again a fantastic tour, with so much achieved and gained. Everything was in place, the organisation, facilities, equipment and training aids were provided by Sport n Safari. We want to keep promoting the game of rugby league here in South Africa and will put an unforgettable tour together for you here at Sport n Safari . |
