MedcsKingsPark  British Army Medical Services Rugby Union Tour

The Army Medical Services (MAS) where here in
South Africa on a full 15 days action packed rugby
tour with one of the highlights being able to watch
the first British Lions game against the Springboks.

The MAS Landed in Durban South Africa and did not
have much time to acclimatise before their first game
which was against Pietermaritzburg Varsity.

Training went well in beautiful surroundings and the
first game was a great game with both sides scoring
many tries. Final score 45 - 41 to Varsity.

After recovery sessions the following day there was a 2 day safari and battlefield tour that
lay ahead. Up at 05:00 we left for Rorkes Drift, the famous Anglo-Zulu war. The team
found it very interesting and some uttered the words, " I can't believe I'm actually here at
Rorkes Drift! ". The team also visited a Anglo-Boer site of Spionkop. One of the bloodiest
battles between the Boers and Brits. They say from a medical perspective it was a
nightmare on that high, wet and dark hill that is Spionkop.

After a full day on the battlefields it was off to the Springbok Lodge in Nambiti private
game reserve. The hospitality was tops, food exquisite and many animals. Had the
evening meal outside around the fire after an amazing performance of a zulu dance.
A good nights rest and up early for another game drive but this one was an adrenaline
rush as the male lion mock charged the open safari vehicle.

MTraining1 Back to Umdloti, just north of Durban and straight to the
training field in preparation for the 2nd match which was
against Durban Rover, the no1 club in Kwazulu-Natal.
This game did not disappoint and was another cracking
one with the hosts winning 28-18. Again the team
was hosted very well.
One of the highlights of the tour must have been the first
test matches between the Springboks and the British
and Irish Lions. The whole team had tickets and were
hosted by Sport n Safari in a hospitality suite. They
also had tickets for the Sharks v Lions game. A once
in a lifetime opportunity.

As soon as the MAS team arrived it was time for them to go back to the UK.
A wonderful tour with a lot that was achieved. This is what you can expect
on a tour to South Africa that Sport n Safari will put together for you.
